Location

           Karpaga Vinayaka Temple is situated on the eastern side of a rocky hill in Pillaiyarpatti village (also known as Pillaiyarpatti). The temple is approximately 75 kilometers (47 mi) north-east of Madurai city and 15 kilometers (9.3 mi) north-west of Pillaiyarpatti city in Tamil Nadu. Pilliyarpatti is located about 12 km east of Tiruppathur city. Pillayarpatti can be reached by National Highway 36 and State Highway 35. The image of Karpaga Vinayagar is carved in a cave in the Pillaiyarpatti hills in this village. Thiruvesar (Shiva) is also carved into the rock of this cave, along with several other bas-reliefs from the 7th century

Histroy

            The Karpaka Vinayagar Temple at Pilliyarpatti is a temple about 1600 years old. This temple is a Chhatra temple. The Pallava kings were the best in the construction of such temples. Studies say that this temple was built by Pallava king Mahendra Varma who came from him. Ganesha, the source of this temple is known as Karpaka Ganesha. The Ganesh idol found in this temple is believed to have been carved in the 4th century. Like Vinayaka, here 14 idols have been carved as Kudavar idols.

       There are four "Arjuna Forest Temples" in South India. Of these, three are in Tamil Nadu and one in Andhra Pradesh.

           "Pillayarpatti Karpaka Ganesha Temple" is one of the three in Tamil Nadu.

            Since the 12th century AD, the deities have been performing in this temple under the supervision of the residents of Chettinadu. This small temple built on the top of a hill depicts Lord Ganesha holding a linga in his right hand. He is also known as Valampuri Ganesh, whose trunk is curved like that of Valampuri. The inner part of the temple was built by the Pandian kings in the form of a Kudavarai temple. The exterior has been constructed by the citizens of Nattukottai.

While pulling the chariot for Pillaiyar, the men hold a rope and the women pull the chariot.

            Only women and children pull the Chandikeshwar palm.

            Vinayagar Chaturthi Festival is celebrated in this temple for 9 days. On the last day of the nine-day festival, 80 kg sandalwood is taken out for Pillaiyar. Devotees visit this temple in large numbers to witness this decorative display which is performed only once in a year.
