Around 1900, the woody areas together with the settlements were developing and in due course merged to create a notable village, which was soon brought under Panchayat board management. Later on, major infrastructure developments were undertaken, starting with its administration that was changed to Municipality in 1928, the junction was created in 1930, a Government hospital [the present day Gandhi Maligai] was established in 1940, and other facilities like road, drinkable, electricity, communication were laid out. of these improvements transformed this village into a well-known town.

Architecture

Every house in Karaikudi is a mansion, just by looking at its grand architecture. Experts believe that these buildings, built using limestone, are centuries old. The most famous building is the ``Airam Window House'' which is built with 20 doors and 1000 windows and is the most important treasure of Karaikudi. Chettinad Palace and Kaviarasu Kannadasan Mani Mandapam are other highlights of Karaikudi.
