1.Melapaluvur

The old name of this village is Mannuperumpalvur, Periyapaluvur.

During the time of the Chola kings from Aditya I to Rajendra Chola I, the Paluvettarayars from Kerala settled this village with their capital in the Ariyalur region. Kumaran Kandan, Kumaran Maravan, Kandan Amuthan, Maravan Kandan etc. were the kings of the Paluvettaraiyar family. The Sundareswarar temple in this city dates back to the period of Aditya Chola I. Its name is Pakvidai Easwaram.

2.keezapaluvur

keezapaluvur was formed as part of the capital of Paluvettarayas. It was a brahmadeya village in Gunarakuram, which was known as Sirufavur. Thirunnasambandar sang hymns about the Alanthuraiyar temple in the 7th century AD. It is said that sage Parashurama had done penance here to remove the sin of killing his mother. This temple was worshiped by Malayalam Brahmins during the time of Sant Sambandar. This temple was built with stones during the reign of Parantaka Cholan I and Uttam Cholan.

3.Thirumalappadi

         Vaidyanath Swamy Temple - Tirumalapadi

The history of this place dates back to the Sangam period. Since it was a military camp of the Malavar dynasty during the Sangam period, it was called Malavarpadi and later Thirumalapady.

The Shiva temple Devara known as Vaidyanath Swamy at this place was worshiped and sung by the Nayanmar Appar, Sambandar and Sundarar.

It is worshiped by the Ayyadis Kadavargon and mentioned and praised in their area Venpa. This sage has been identified with Simmavarma Pallava (540-558), father of Mahendravarma Pallava (598-630).

It is believed that the deity of this place appeared in Sundarar's dream and asked him to go to his place and praise him. Accordingly Sundarar came to this temple to worship and started singing the famous Devara song 'Ponnar Maniyane'.

4.Kamarasavalli

Kamarasavalli

The Vazhalampala Amman Udanurai Sundareswarar Temple in this city was built in 962 AD during the Sundar Chola period. Local legends say that the place got its name as Kamarathivalli because Rathi saved her husband Kamadeva from penance here. In the eastern part of this city there is a town named Alagiyamanavalam. It was named after Rathi's handsome husband Alagiyamanavalam (beautiful husband - Cupid). A beautiful bronze idol of Rathi is preserved in this temple.

Karkodeshwari

One story states that the temple was given as Karkodaka Easwaram because the Naga king Karkodaka worshiped Lord Shiva here to get rid of his curse. In this temple an inscription tablet with illustrations narrating this story is preserved. There are more than 40 inscriptions from the Chola, Pandya and Hoysala periods. Inscriptions indicate that this temple is also named as Tirunallur Srikovil Mahadevar, Thirunallur Parameshwara, Tirukarkotaka Eshwaruthu Mahadevar Kovil. Inscriptions indicate that the city was also named Kamarasavalisaathurvedimangalam. The temple houses sculptures from the Chola era and bronze sculptures.

5.Vikramangalam

The village was established during the reign of Rajendra Chola I and was called Vikramcholapuram after his family name. Inscriptions from the reigns of Vikrama Chola, Kulothunga Chola II and Kulothunga Chola III state that the place was a tributary city of the Chola kings.

From this place he ordered many temples of the Chola country to donate land. During the Chola period, Vikramcholapuram was a famous center of trade and commerce. Beautiful Jain and Buddhist sculptures of the Chola period are preserved in this village. The Echivan temple known as Rajendra Choleswaram dates back to the period of Rajendra Chola I (1012–1044).

6.Gangaikondacholapuram, Gangaikondacholaicharar Temple

The Ganga campaign of Rajendra Chola was started in the 11th year of his reign. The recently discovered Eslam copper plates provide conclusive evidence that the Gangaikondacholicharam temple was built by Rajendra Chola I in 1036 AD. The donation of villages to this temple by Irajendra Chola in the 24th year of his reign is available from the inscriptions of Veerarajendra Chola, who ruled in 1068 AD. A living piece of history, the temple is a beautiful collection of Chola art and architecture from the time of Rajendra Chola I. Many sculptures brought from Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka and Bengal are preserved as war memorials in this temple and surrounding villages.

Sandesheshwar Anugrah Murthy and Saraswati are the beautiful idols of this temple. Presently, the temple is under the control of the Archaeological Department of India and the Hindu Religious Charitable Trust Department of the Government of Tamil Nadu. Recently UNESCO has declared it as one of the World Heritage Sites.

7.Vettakudi- Karaiyavetty Bird Sanctuary

According to Section 18(1) of the Wildlife Protection Act 1972, Government Ordinance No. 219, Department of Environment and Forests (FR.VI), dated 10.06.1997 also notified for setting up Karaveti Bird Sanctuary in 453.71 hectare area. The sanctuary is basically an irrigation lake. The lake gets its water from Mettur reservoir from September. It also receives additional water from the northeast monsoon from October to January.

The sanctuary is one of the most important freshwater lakes in Tamil Nadu for migratory waterfowl. It is one of the major lakes of the state. The lake has been recorded as having the highest concentration of waterfowl in the state. Out of 188 bird species in this sanctuary, 82 species are waterfowl. The nearby barred duck is one of the main visitors to this lake. The best time to visit this sanctuary is September-March.

8.Elakurichi

Elakurichi is one of the most famous Elakurichi temple sites in Ariyalur district. It is a holy place of worship for Roman Catholics. Joseph Pesci of Constantinople known as Veeramamunivar came to Ariyalur from Italy and spread Christianity between 1710 and 1742 AD. Adhikala Matha temple here was built by him. He cured the fatal disease of a villager with the blessings of Mother Mother. Pleased to see the service of Sage Veerama, the villager donated 60 acres of land to this temple. References to this gift are inscribed on an inscription dated 1763 AD and preserved in this temple.
